About Stillwater, Oklahoma

Stillwater is a college town with spirit, culture, energy, youthfulness, diversity, and unity. Located in north-central Oklahoma, Stillwater is the area’s educational, shopping, dining and recreational hub. We are a vibrant city of approximately 50,000 residents, conveniently located just 20 miles east of I-35, one hour from Oklahoma City and Tulsa and one and a half hours from Wichita, Kansas.


About the Stillwater Police Department

A strong community-policing philosophy guides the efforts of the department as officers work with partners in the community to identify and solve problems. The department is a full-service law enforcement agency with 80 sworn officers and 45 civilian support employees who provide 24/7 police services.

The Stillwater Police Department is housed in a state of the art facility. The building is a four story structure including underground parking, office space, fitness center, central communications center, detention center, and full classroom training facilities.


Salary/Benefits (2022)

Starting Salary Range:

  • $53,289 - $60,008 annually (based on experience)

Paid Training

Applicants who are accepted into the academy will begin their employment as a Police Recruit with the Stillwater Police Department. The police recruit will attend the Stillwater Police Department Recruit Training Academy. The academy lasts approximately 27 weeks and is a non-residential academy. Applicants are paid employees while attending the academy. Upon successful completion of the SPD Police Academy, the recruit will then start our Field Training and Evaluation Program that is 15 weeks. After completion of the probationary period, new officers are eligible to apply for specialized assignments in addition to regular duties.


Equipment

In addition to the state of the art facilities, department members are outfitted with all equipment and uniforms at no cost to the employee, including a Glock 17 9mm, and AR-15.

SPD also offers a take home car program with each vehicle equipped with a laptop and high speed internet.

Qualifications 

The Stillwater PD selection process is designed to select the most qualified applicant.

Basic qualifications include the following:

  • Must be 21-45 years of age

  • In good physical condition

  • No felony convictions

  • No serious misdemeanor convictions

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, college preferred


Hiring Process

To ensure the best candidate is selected, the process is extensive and is outlined below:

  • Initial application

  • Written examination

  • Physical agility testing (Police officer applicants only)

  • Oral interview board

  • Comprehensive background investigation

  • Psychological testing

  • Polygraph examination

  • Police pension medical examination (Police officer applicants only)

  • Pre-employment drug screen

  • Interview with chief of police
