(STILLWATER, OK) – The Husband St. Bridge project will take, at minimum, a half year longer to complete and approximately $500k more than originally earmarked due to identified issues discovered with the subsurface conditions.
In Sept. 2014, the City of Stillwater outsourced geotechnical and engineering services, which included investigative boring. The plan for construction was based on the bedrock elevation included in the geotechnical report.
Construction began in spring 2022, once funding became available. After the bridge was demolished and removed, and excavation for the abutment foundations had begun it was discovered the bedrock, on which the abutments were to be founded, was not at the elevations shown on the geotechnical borings. Subsequent borings indicate the bedrock is approximately 20 feet below the level included in the report.
The inaccurate geotechnical report and data has caused a temporary halt to the project to allow for a redesign of the abutment foundations and to bid the new foundation system. Bidding will open on Sept. 23, and will be presented to Council for action on Oct. 3.
