MEDIA RELEASE

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / April 19, 2018) – Are you interested in serving your community and helping make decisions that impact the future of Stillwater? If yes, you’re encouraged to apply for the vacancy on the Stillwater City Council.

Seat 1 on the Council is currently vacant since April 16, 2018, due to the recent election of Mayor Will Joyce to Seat 5. Joyce was originally elected to Seat 1 in April 2016.

The remaining term length of the seat will expire in April 2019.

Council is now accepting applications through April 30, 2018, for review and possible action.

To apply for Seat 1, fill out the online application form at stillwater.org/applyforcouncil.

Per Sec. 2-10 of the City Charter, the City Council has 60 days from the date the vacancy occurs to fill the seat by appointment. If the Council does not fill the vacancy within this time period, then a special election must be called.

Council generally meets the first and third Mondays of the month in the Council Hearing Room at the Municipal Building, 723 S. Lewis St., at 5:30 p.m.

The City of Stillwater operates under a council-manager system. In this form of government, an elected City Council is responsible for making policy, passing ordinances and approving the City’s budget. The Council appoints a city manager who implements the policies the Council adopts.

The Council is comprised of five members who are elected at-large. The public elects the mayor, who presides over the meetings; the Council elects one of its members to serve as vice mayor. The councilors also serve as trustees on the Stillwater Utilities Authority and Stillwater Economic Development Authority.

For questions about applying, call the City Manager’s Office at 405.742.8209.
