(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / Jan. 5, 2018) – The City of Stillwater urges utility customers to watch out for potential phone scams targeting them to get their credit card or bank account information.
Over the past few weeks, several customers received phone calls from people claiming to represent the City asking them to wire payments or make other arrangements for their bills.
The caller told customers their account was delinquent and their service would be cut off if payment was not made immediately. Fortunately, these customers called Utility Customer Service directly and inquired before making a payment.
These calls are a ruse to get money from unsuspecting victims. If you receive a phone call regarding a delinquent utilities account payment with the City of Stillwater you should call Customer Service at 405.742.8245 to verify the information.
The City of Stillwater does make delinquent account phone call notifications to customers in some circumstances. Staff members who make these calls do not ask for credit card or bank account information.
Customers are instead referred to the City’s website or automated phone system to submit payments. Delinquent utility account customers are also sent a written notice of the delinquency before getting a phone call.
