(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / Nov. 29, 2017) – On Thanksgiving Day, a local family brought food to the Stillwater Police Department to feed the officers who were on shift and unable to spend the holiday with their families. Later in the evening, that family was struck by tragedy when their 3-year-old daughter Merida was accidentally hit by a car, causing serious trauma.

Stillwater Police, Stillwater Fire and local paramedics responded to the incident and promptly sent the child to OU Medical Center.

“We learned this week that one of our officers put out an envelope at 7 a.m. this past Friday for donations to the family,” City Manager Norman McNickle said. “By 5 p.m., the envelope was filled with up to $800 in donations from within the department.”

SPD transferred the money to a debit card and delivered it and a signed card to the family to help them with any immediate financial needs.

“We’ve always taken great pride in our law enforcement officers, and I want to personally commend them for their compassionate response to this family in such a difficult time,” McNickle said. “We are also thankful for our first responders’ swift actions in helping this young girl.”

Capt. Kyle Gibbs said: “We just want to express our support for Merida and her family. Our thoughts are with her.”
