Site Selection Criteria Checklist


1. Determine whether planting location is considered a street tree or yard tree.
____a. Street Tree (within 16.5' of curb/pavement edge or within 10' of a sidewalk).
____b. Yard Tree (beyond 16.5' of curb/pavement edge or more than 10' from a sidewalk).

2. Meets Ordinance spacing or separation standards?
____a. Underground Utility Lines (5 lateral feet from a utility line)
____b. Sidewalk or Curb (3' for small tree, 4' for medium, 5' for large)

3. Complies with desirable separation from overhead utility lines?
____a. (20 to 35 lateral feet from pole alignment for large trees depending on tree shape, 15 to 25' for medium, none for small)

4. Avoid obstruction of Vehicular Sight Distance
____a. If within sight triangle at street intersection (30' leg measured in each direction along curb), limit to one large tree
____b. If within sight triangle where driveway intersects with street (15' legs measured along driveway and curb), limit to medium or large tree

5. Adequate separation from street lights (20'-large, 15'-medium, 10'-small).

6. Adequate separation from fire hydrant (10', 5' from water line)

7. Appropriate separation or spacing from existing trees

8. Appropriate spacing from house or building.

9. If southern exposure to home, consideration given to selection of species conducive to maximum winter solar gain.
