Future Programs:
The Stillwater Tree Board has several goals for the City of Stillwater's Urban Forest. One of those goals is to try to find ways of making current management of our urban forest more efficient and cost effective for citizens of Stillwater. Last July the Stillwater Tree Board received a grant from the Oklahoma State Urban and Community Forestry Council to buy a GIS (Geographical Information System). This GIS, called ArcView, is helping the Tree Board locate and prioritize some crucial management areas for Stillwater's Urban Forest. These areas include the location of all available public tree planting locations, the spatial analysis of the current condition of our urban forest and the analysis of our current tree and utility line conflicts. The following grant application explains the focus of each of these objectives.
Stillwater Park Plan
The Stillwater Tree Board created and adopted the Stillwater Community Forestry Plan in 1995 which was later adopted by the Stillwater City Commission in 1996 as part of the City of Stillwater's Comprehensive Plan. The Community Forestry Plan helps us pinpoint objectives for the improvement of the public areas of urban forest in Stillwater. One particular objective in the plan was to increase the amount of tree planting in the park areas. The urban forest in our parks is in a state of decline much like the city-wide urban forest. Park areas also make up a great deal of the land area available for possible tree planting in Stillwater. As a result, the Tree Board is currently working on making a Master Park Tree Plan in cooperation with the City of Stillwater Parks and Recreation Department. This plan will pin point where specific tree removals pruning and replacements should take place. For more information contact Carrie Tomlinson Forestry Coordinator for the City of Stillwater.
