Michaele Page "Mike" Henson died on August 26, 2000. "Mayor Mike" was elected to the Stillwater City Commission in 1986, elected mayor in 1988, elected mayor in1997, reelected in 2000 and was serving as mayor at the time of her death. Mayor Henson was proud to be a graduate of Class II of Leadership Stillwater. Her current activities included Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Municipal League, Oklahoma Conference of Mayors, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Stillwater Industrial Foundation Board of Trustees, Stillwater Medical Center Authority Board of Trustees, Stillwater Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors, Stillwater Chapter of AARP, and the Child Advocacy Task Force. Mike was the founder of the Red Ribbon Campaign in Stillwater and actively involved in the programs that promote a drug-free life for young people and our citizens through the Mayor's Wellness Committee. She was also very active in the Sister Cities Programs and the relationship with the citizens of Kameoka, Japan. A few of her previous activities included Oklahoma Water Resources Board Member, Stillwater Sister Cities Council, Stillwater Apartment Association, American Business Women's Association, Stillwater Transportation Committee, Chairman of Stillwater Community Center Board, Gatesway West Advisory Board, Stillwater Museum Associates Board, State Board of Oklahoma Alliance Against Drugs, President of Brentwood Condominium Board, Lincoln Academy Advisory Board, and Town and Tribes Together Task Force. She had been trained as a mediator for the Payne County Early Settlement Resolution project. "Mayor Mike" touched countless lives in her elective offices, civic work, church and choir activities, and international relations, particularly in her advocacy for children and youth. She will be long remembered not only for her public life and her devotion to her family, but also for the radiant smile that she wore; the loving kindness that she bestowed; the sweetness of spirit that she shared; the children and grandchildren that are her legacy; and the faithful servant's life that was her example.
